Just getting started scrapbooking your years and years of
memories? Overwhelmed by the task? Here are a few tips to get
you started and help you create lasting memories for your
whole family to cherish.
- Don't start in the past
Start in the present and work forward. Do pages based on
current events and move forward in time. Only go back and do
older photos and events when you have caught up on the present. And then
only tackle one historical theme/page at a time. Then go
back to the present. The huge task of documenting your
child's life from age 1-12 won't seem so overwhelming.
- Prep your historical memories
That way you'll be ready to put everything into pages
whenever you have the time. Use a file box and folders.
Label each folder and sort all of your memories by person,
age, theme, event, or however you plan to organize your
scrapbooks. Don't worry about cropping or journaling at this
stage. Only focus on sorting so that all the pictures,
souvenirs, newspaper clippings, etc. for one event are
stored together in a file.
Then when you have some extra time focus on just one of your
folders. The task won't seem so overwhelming. You'll be able
to finish those old folders over the next few months, all
the while keeping up with your current scrapbooking
projects.
- Don't forget the journaling
An important part of each scrapbook, journaling is the key
to remembering cherished events. A great tip for journaling
is not to just to focus on the details of an event, include
everyone's emotions and reactions. Add funny bits of dialog
or explain how an event brought family members closer
together (for example...include journaling that depicts how
a feuding brother and sister bonded over a funny or special
event). In the years to come, the journaling will make you
smile, laugh and cry more so than any neatly decorated pages
with pictures alone.
